Finding where to start and what to clear out next can become difficult. Keeping only the things that bring you joy can change your life in amazing ways. Here are ten things to declutter the Marie Kondo way. Need a more detailed explanation? Marie Kondo illustrates how to declutter your life!
Clothes
The first thing Marie Kondo has you go through is clothes. Many of us have clothes in our closets and dressers that we haven’t even seen in months. Clothes that no longer fit. Clean out your closet keeping only the things you love and reorganize so that you can see all of your clothes easily making you more likely to wear them.
Dishes
Many families collect dishes in large numbers. There is no reason to have twenty coffee cups for 2 people. Reduce the dishes in your home and you will reduce the amount of time and energy you put into washing dishes each time.
Photos
Photos can be a meaningful way to preserve memories but often we take multiples in a situation or have photos that do not bring us joyful memories. Go through your boxes of photos and keep only what brings you joy. File them away neatly in a smaller box or fill photo albums making looking at and enjoying your photos easier.
Books
Books can take over a home quickly. While using your local library can reduce these books still gather in a home quickly. Go through them all keeping only the one that you have a connection with. Marie Kondo suggests you start by picking your favorite book, hold it and think about how it makes you feel. Keep other books that give you a similar emotional response.
Paper
Paper documents can take over your home. If you have stacks of paper take the time to sort out what you truly need and file them away neatly so they are not a point of stress for you.
Toiletries
Toiletries and beauty products can take over the bathroom. (Also hall and linen closets, and more, if you are a person who likes to stockpile). Reduce the things you do not use to make your bathroom more organized and easier to care for. There’s not usually a need to have a closet in your home that’s better stocked than your local CVS…
Kid’s Stuff
Children should join the cleanout. After tackling your child clothes working on the toys should come next. Broken toys and toys your child no longer enjoys can go, leaving more room to organize everything so they can enjoy it more.
Cords
We all joke about the box of cords that we have with now uses anymore. This takes up space and makes it harder to find the cords you need. Clear out those cords instead of having them take up space in your home
Random Things with No Homes
Items that have no home take up the largest chunk of Marie Kondo’s mucilaginous section. Clean out the rooms you find yourself storing random things in like your garage. Keep only the things that bring you joy and happiness.
Momentos
The last category Marie Kondo asks you to sort through its momentos. The things you hold onto due to emotional connections you make to them. By the time you get to this category, you will have learned how to let go making it easier to decide what truly brings you joy and happiness.

A great post. I’m reluctant to watch her show. I tend to keep everything! But all smart tips!

I am also a CT blogger! I have actually been decluttering in my bedroom closet. Taking out stuff that I haven’t worn in years! The cool thing is this: My sister’s town offers bags that say: Let Your Clothing Be Loved Again! There are pictures on the bag that shows what can be put inside the bag: clothes, shoes, pocketbooks, sunglasses, etc. It’s actually pretty cool! Then the bags are taken to the curb for pickup! And— you also get new bags! 🙂 Win-Win! I have a bag filled and working on more. I do this every other month! It’s fun 🙂
This weekend, I was looking for something to watch on Netflix and of all the movies I looked at I chose The Organizing one: Kon Mari. I just watched the first one. Little did I know how popular she is. I saw many posts on facebook of people talking about it and also posting boxes of Garbage bags to get the job done!
