7 Ways to Practice Math Skills This Summer
1. Cook something.
When you cook a recipe with your child, you practice math skills such as measuring and adding. Find a fun recipe and create it with your child, allowing them to be the one who measures out the ingredients. The end result is educational and tasty!
2. Go shopping.
When you shop with your child, you can practice counting money, adding, subtracting, and even percentages when talking about sales and specials. Take your child to a local thrift store with a budget to spend. In this challenge they will have to add their costs and figure their change as well as any special sale prices. Now that is a lot of math!
3. Plant a garden.
What does gardening have to do with math? You will need to measure out your space and use geometry to plan the space. You can also measure your plants as they grow, track the rainfall in inches, and count/weigh the amount of produce you grow and harvest.
4. Nightly flashcards.
Spend a few minutes each night practicing flashcards with your child. These can be addition, subtraction, fractions, etc. You can do this task after reading before bed each night if you wish. It is a great way to keep minds sharp.
5. Download some math apps.
Find some cheap or free math themed games and apps for your smart phone or tablet. On long car rides or while waiting in line somewhere your child can play fun and exciting math games sure to keep their minds fresh.
6. Bath tub math.
Take foam numbers into the bathtub for your child to use and create their own story problems. This is a fun way to get clean and smart at the same time.
7. Watch a movie!
