The summer months are a wonderful time to continue exploring science. After all, it is all around you! Take a look below at 7 science activities to enjoy this summer with your child. These activities will help keep their minds fresh and active in science and ready for a new school year.
7 Science Activities to Enjoy This Summer
1. Plant an herb garden.
Plant a small herb garden right in your windowsill. This is a chance to see how seeds grow and how vital water and light are. Watch the seeds each day as they sprout and keep a growth journal to collect stats in. When done, cook your herbs up in a fun recipe!
2. Feed the birds.
Go to the library and find out which birds dwell in your area. Put out the appropriate food for them so they come to your yard. Observe them and their habits, watch their young grow, find out where they nest, and learn other fun facts.
3. Sink or Float.
What sinks and what floats? A kiddie pool is perfect for finding out the answer to this question. Take an assortment of items (rock, leaf, toys, etc.) and make predictions about each. Then, test your theories out and see what happens.
4. Watch the weather.
Weather changes almost daily in the summer months. Make a point to watch the weather forecast each night or in the paper. Keep a weather log and have your child do a small presentation each night about the day’s weather.
5. Be a bug keeper.
Look for signs of insect life in your yard. Learn about the various bugs you find and even build a habitat in a shoebox. Watch their eating habits, observe their colors, and learn about how they protect themselves.
6. Visit a state park.
Attend a local park that has a nature center you can explore. These centers offer a lot of hands on opportunities that are fun for both you and your children.
7. Be mad scientists.
What happens when you mix baking soda and vinegar? What about when you mix different hues of food coloring? Find fun science experiments for kids online and practice them in your own kitchen. Kids love being mad scientists.
Give these tips a try and your kids are sure to have some silly science fun!
