My first Thanksgiving that I cooked was a holiday disaster all around. My upset stomach started hours before the guests arrived…and only got worse with the ‘helpful’ tips and suggestions from the guests who showed up two hours late. I darn near burned the turkey, forgot the giblets in the bird, and the stuffing went straight to the trash. It’s funny now but I was devastated! The leftovers were still amazing the rest of the weekend, especially without the family drama included after the guests left.
Thankfully, I’ve had lots more practice cooking larger meals and have gotten pretty good at turkey roasting. (I won’t lie, the convection oven helps immensely with that!) But I have this tendency to overcook. And over cook. By over cook, I mean too much food for how many are at our table. Some part of me seems to think that since I descend from William Bradford (Mayflower genealogy, anyone?) that I need to prepare enough for all of the American Indians and Pilgrims plus their friends. The difference for my foods is that I have more modern dishes and, well, my guests don’t stay for more than a day. I’ve done a twist on a well-known Apple Sage Stuffing for a while and everyone who eats it complains they eat too much of it…because they go back again and again. It’s just that good. But it pairs really well with the turkey and the potatoes and the veggies and oh, gravy… so many things to enjoy for our bellies. We just can’t help but overindulge.
If you can’t make it through the daylong celebration of food, football and family- be thankful that you weren’t around for the first Thanksgiving. It lasted for three days. Three. Full. Days. That celebration took place in the fall of 1621 in Plymouth Colony between European settlers and the Wampanoag Indians and it lasted three days. Talk about a food coma. (Livescience.com) Can I just say that again? Three full days. Of all the people in your house eating all of the things.
According to the National Turkey Federation, 88 percent of Americans have turkey on Thanksgiving. (Livescience.com) (I know many folks in the other 12%, oddly). Many like ham instead!! Or a tofurkey. Or a roast.
Turkey consumption has increased 104% since 1970. (University of Illinois Extension)
Research has shown that people tend to gain about a pound each holiday season. (TIME)

Better be safe than sorry, so why not pack a bottle of Pepto Liquid with you when you attend Thanksgiving this year!? You’ll be the most popular person there.

My family is pretty tame and still it seems like we have at least one minor disaster each year! It never hurts to be prepared!

While I appreciate the reminder to get the Pepto Bismal…cuz I know it will be needed, I really want that stuffing recipe. Is it elsewhere o your blog?
Ourfamilyworld says
Hosting a party can really be stressful. A bottle of Pepto is a must have!
Janis @MommyBlogExpert says
Thanksgiving is definitely stressful if you have family staying with you for the holiday. With all the added chaos and good food you’ll be eating it makes sense to have Pepto Bismol in the medicine cabinet in case you or your guest start not feeling so well.
Ann BAcciaglia says
Great items to have in a basket for your guests. Sometimes eating all the rich food can upset tummies and Pepto will help for sure.
Autumn @Mamachallenge says
I need to make one of those kits! There a so many people at my Thanksgiving dinner that get heartburn and forget their phone chargers.
Stacie says
I tend to keep Pepto on hand in my home but in the pill form. Pepto seemed to be the cure all when I was a child. I like your emergency kit list. I haven’t though about have all types of chargers on hand. It’s a great idea especially the air freshener.
Jenna Wood says
Pepto-Bismol is a must! I tend to over eat a lot around the holidays- I don’t mind, but my body doesn’t care for it! It’s bad when your stomach turns on you!
Shauna says
Yup… those are all great to have on hand. Last year I was feeling so bloated and didn’t have anything on hand and the store was closed 🙁 Thanks for sharing…

I have never once made a turkey. I wouldn’t even know where to begin. I leave the holiday meals to my husband, and he does an amazing job! These are some great tips! I need a kit like this stat!
Liz Mays says
These are essentials! I have to make sure we have plenty of Pepto-Bismol. I think my boyfriend is going to cooking a lot of dishes that may trigger heartburn.
Nancy @ Whispered Inspirations says
What a great emergency kit. With all the indulgence over the holidays, you have to be prepared.
Daisy says
I need one of these kits for my husband. Poor guy – he always gets heartburn and needs Pepto.
Jeanette says
I have made the turkey once and this year again I will make it. Hopefully it will turn out. I stress about other things, but food I don’t, I think because there is always something else to eat. LOL
Jennifer says
I believe that if you don’t have to take Pepto at a holiday meal, you haven’t eaten enough. LOL.
Robin (Masshole Mommy) says
Gotta have that Pepto on hand, right? It’s good stuff.
