The Cheeses of Europe Marketing Council is composed of French dairy farmers (approximately 20,000 farmers!) and cheese firms. Their mission is to create awareness about the variety of the cheeses of Europe available on the US market and the multiple ways that American consumers can incorporate the cheeses into their diets, their recipes and their lifestyles. They were hosting an event at the CT Open last week, and invited me to come down and visit, learn a little about their cheeses, and sample some as well.
My favorite thing about this event was the cheese. Duh. But seriously. Ever since I was pregnant with my son, I’ve had a love for cheese. It grows deeper as I age- and I love finding new cheeses to taste and enjoy.
There’s also a lot of history, lore and storytelling that comes with some of these cheeses that I hadn’t really thought about before. The Mimolette cheese, for example, is a hard cheese, proposed to be excellent for a grilled cheese sandwich (and I will be trying one in the next few weeks, my friends). It’s an aged cheese, and when you look quickly, it almost doesn’t even look like cheese. It looks a lot like a melon from the outside, don’t you think?
The Mimolette cheese has a special process while aging that involves the use of mites to help get the rind to have that melon-like appearance. The cheese itself has a wonderful nutty flavor with some hints of butterscotch (I tasted the nutty, a cheese connoisseur I am not, but I am on board with some hints of butterscotch). It’s a great conversation starter, and the vibrant orange color really makes it stand out on a cheese board.
Roquefort is kind of the grandaddy of all bleu cheeses. Apparently, a young sheperd took some of his sheep’s milk in the rennet into a cave, and left it behind. A few months later he remembered it, went in, and for some reason, decided it looked good enough to eat. Lucky us, he did make that decision. All these generations later, we have the amazing Roquefort cheese to enjoy anytime we like! It’s one of my favorites to enjoy in salads.
I cannot in good faith write anything about cheese and not include Brie. It’s one of my most favorite cheeses in all the world. Cheeses of Europe offers 3 varieties of their brie- each so creamy that it melts away on your tongue.
Emmental is the smoky flavored cheese of this group. It’s called Forest here in the US, and it’s a hickory smoked cheese that you’re going to reach for again and again at the store.
What are your favorite cheeses? Have you tried any of the Cheeses of Europe? Which kind? I am off to find how to have some of these delivered to my house!

I love cheese especially feta, but never tried any of these. My husband’s friend introduced us to a kind of Swiss cheese back when we were in Manila this summer and it was so good. I forgot the name though. 🙂
