If you have watched any of the Mandalorian episodes on Disney+, you’ve probably fallen in love with the ever adorable “The Child” aka Baby Yoda. He’s tiny and cute and even though he’ll eat frogs and a mama lizards eggs without thinking twice, he’s endearing and loveable and it’s hard to resist the cute. That’s what inspired this new Elf on the Shelf costume– because why NOT bring a little Baby Yoda into your house this holiday season? Baby Yoda and Elf on the Shelf were destined to be together, I think.
A note about this project: You can just use more of the tan felt for the collar of Baby Yoda’s coat. Construction paper also likely works just as well as foam for the head and ears- it won’t hold up as long, but if you’re looking for ways to cut back on the cost…those are 2 easy ways off the bat. I know not everyone keeps wired burlap ribbon or foam sheets on hand.
Baby Yoda Elf on the Shelf Costume
Materials:
green foam sheet
pink foam sheet
hot glue and hot glue gun
scissors
pencil or pen
regular and thin permanent markers
white acrylic paint
toothpick
2.5″ wide wired burlap ribbon
tan felt
yarn
pattern
rubber band
Directions:
Use a rubber band to tuck your elf’s legs into his body if desired.
Cut out the pattern pieces with scissors. Trace the pattern pieces onto the felt and foam sheets. Cut them out with scissors.
Hot glue the pink ear pieces onto the green ear pieces.
Affix the head onto the ears with hot glue.
Draw eyes, nose, mouth and forehead wrinkles with a black marker.
Use a toothpick dipped in white acrylic paint to add white to the eyes. Let set to dry.
To make the robe, fold over one edge of the pattern as shown.
Secure with hot glue.
Overlap the center of the robe and attach together with hot glue.
Cut a piece of burlap ribbon 4.5″ in length. Fold in half.
Tuck the robe into the folded piece of burlap and secure with hot glue.
Fold the edges back as shown.
Cut a few pieces of yarn about 5″ in length. Tuck the end of a piece of yarn into the folded piece of the burlap and secure with hot glue. Repeat on the other side of the robe.
Tie the robe onto the elf. Place the face mask onto the front of your elf and tuck into the top of the robe.
I did not have to secure the mask to the elf. I simply tucked it into the robe and it stayed there. If you need to secure the mask to the elf, simply roll a piece of tape, adhesive side out, and put it on the back of the mask. Press it gently onto the face of the elf to keep the mask in place.
