We all want to make sure that we look after our loved ones and that is certainly so when it comes to their health. One area of everyone’s health that’s important to look after is their hearing. After all, their hearing can be very sensitive and vulnerable to damage if not looked after properly.
From educating the little ones on noise safety to putting in preventative measures to reduce noise damage, here’s how to look after your household’s hearing.
Keep television volume and speakers low
When it comes to television time, be wary of how loud the volume and speakers are. It’s useful to try and set the volume and speakers at a fixed point so that they remain that way day in, and day out.
Turning up the volume can end up causing noise damage to the ears, especially if they’re subjected to it for long periods of time. Keeping the television volume at a certain level should be done, especially for the little ones. As you get older, it can be tempting to turn up the volume but try to force-train your ears to listen to the sound more intently where possible.
Make sure everyone keeps their ears clean and dry
When teaching your little ones about personal hygiene, it’s important to teach them about cleaning their ears safely. It’s not ideal to get water in the ears because this stagnant water that’s not dried properly can cause ear infections.
Ear infections can lead to hearing loss, so it’s good to remind them to clean their ears properly if they get wet. This is the same for dirt and debris that can often get into a person’s ears. Make sure they know to keep them clean and to wear earplugs if they’re doing any activities that could result in mud or dirt going in them.
Avoid any loud noises
Loud noises are not ideal to be around for too long and when it comes to loud concerns or events, it’s worth letting your loved ones know that they should step away every so often. This can help give the ears a break and hopefully minimize any damage done.
Try to avoid loud noises, in general, to help reduce the impact that this noise can have on everyone’s ears.
Identify any existing hearing loss
There are different types of hearing loss that is useful to know so that if you do have any type of hearing loss, it can be identified easily. It’s worth having regular health checks to make sure that everyone’s ears are in good condition. A hearing exam for every family member can help keep tabs on hearing and any underlying conditions that may be bubbling away.
Ensure soundproof headsets are worn when necessary
Soundproof headsets and earplugs are worth encouraging all family members to wear whenever they’re going anywhere where there’s loud noise.
Be able to prevent hearing problems is important, so do all you can to help protect your family’s hearing for the future.
