The internet is a wonderful place, but there are dangerous people and organizations that exist online. Scammers have grown in abundance, especially as more people in general are finding their way onto the internet for anything and everything nowadays.
There are some common scams on the internet that are worth knowing about so that you can avoid them with a barge pole. Here are some of those common scams to look out for this year. This is a partnered post.
Gaming scams
Gaming scams are rife, especially as they’re so popular. Online games like Roblox and Fortnite allow players to make purchases using in-game currency. Scammers love this because they are taking advantage of young players’ who will unfortunately put their trust in the wrong people and hand over their usernames and passwords.
This will allow scammers to gain personal information, as well as financial information – which is often likely to be that of their parent’s financial information too! These common defrauding efforts should be something to educate children on especially but to be aware of as adults too.
Impersonation scams
Impersonation scams can be a problem, especially when you think the person you’re talking to is the real deal. Impersonation scams will often work by contacting the individual, claiming to be a family member, friend, or colleague that they know.
They’ll lull them into a false sense of security in order to get them to hand over personal information or even send them money in some cases. It’s easy for anyone to fall for this scam but a lot of the older generation are often targeted with this scam, particularly the more vulnerable.
Fake websites
Fake websites are something that you should look at carefully as a scam. With so many websites now on the internet to browse, you are more than likely to come across one or two fake websites during your sessions on the internet. Fraudsters set up fake websites in order to look real but are fake.
Their intention is to try and sell products or services that simply don’t exist in order to receive payment from those who fall for the fake website.
Gift card scams
Gift card scams are something to be mindful of, especially as many people like to purchase them for their loved ones.
Gift card scams involve fraudsters trying to make you pay for the gift card and they’ll usually contact you via various means to start up a conversation. You’re told that payments are to be made using a gift card and that often results in money being stolen.
Phishing
Phishing happens over email and often comes from fraudsters impersonating people that the recipient knows. They may try to ask for information or finance information for example. However, for the most part, they often attach documents or include links that lead to a virus.
Common scams are something to become knowledgeable about in order to avoid them from happening to you.
