When I was a little girl growing up my mother loved apple butter and well … just like a typical child I had to have what she was having of course. My first bite of that creamy, spicy treat on toast led to a lifelong love affair. While it is delicious all year long apple butter just screams fall to me, and fall is my favorite season of all- the flavors, the scents, the crisp air! Besides being a delicious addition to toast it tastes wonderful over ice cream, oatmeal, pancakes, or french toast. If you get a great deal on apples be sure and stock up, this recipe can also be frozen and makes a wonderful hostess gift for the fall or Christmas season.
Easy Crockpot Apple Butter
Ingredients:
5 lb bag of apples
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
Directions:
Peel and slice apples, place in slow cooker. (I cannot tell you enough how I love, love love my All-Clad Slow Cooker). I like to use a combination of 2 or more apples like Fuji, Gala, Red Delicious, or Honeycrisp apples to give a more complex flavor.
Combine water, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg -sprinkle over apples.
Cook on low for 8 -1o hours, stirring occasionally. To get really smooth and creamy apple butter process with an immersion blender until thoroughly mixed.
Spoon into clean mason jars with lid ajar, allow to cool completely and thicken up. Place in refrigerator for up to two weeks or freeze for 6 months.

I was wondering when freezing the apple butter should it be put into a freezer bag or a freezer safe container or can we freeze in the jars?

I don’t use cloves , never cared for it. Maybe use very little. Most the time I just don’t use it. Also can be made in heavy pan in oven over night. You don’t have to peel, just slice andcore in morning peels will be off. Let cool and remove them.
