From checking your gutters are intact to pressure washing your driveway, you have a list of jobs that you need to complete to keep your home running smoothly. Your home maintenance to-do list is probably already as long as your arm and we’re sorry to add to it. This is a contributed post.
However, if we don’t give you these list additions, you’re going to possibly miss out, expand your home maintenance budget and end up with a house that is falling apart. We don’t want that for you – and neither do you. So, let’s check out jobs that you have to do if you want your home to stay in one piece.
- Don’t forget to pressure wash your driveways and your paths. Mold, mildew and dirt build up the outside surfaces, but if you have a pressure washer you’ll be able to get in there and clear out all of that grime. Pressure washing the driveway, any external stairs that you have and the garden paths during the winter months reduces the risk of them becoming a full hazard during wet weather.
- Clear out your gutters. When was the last time you did a gutter check? Do you currently have any gutter guards sitting on your gutters to prevent a buildup of debris? If you don’t, then you need to shop around at these LeafFilter locations. Cleaning out your gutters will tell you whether or not you are dealing with a leak imminently or whether or not your roofing situation is in one piece. The last thing you want to add to your budget this year is a roof replacement, and if you’re not checking your gutters, you’re not going to know.
- Clear out and test your smoke alarms. All of your appliances are a common cause of house fires. Heaters, electric blankets, clothes dryers and even the oven can be a cause of a fire. Preparing your home for an unforeseen emergency by cleaning out the smoke alarms now is a great idea. You should also test the batteries and make sure that they are working and if they’re not, seek out the help of a handyman or even the fire station.
- Call in a HVAC professional. Split system air conditioners are a great way to heat or cool your home, but if it’s been a while since you last cleaned out the filters then it’s probably not running its best. Air conditioning units do require a service every one or two years, and if you’re using them regularly, may need one even sooner. They can grow mold and dust can build up. The dirtier the dust filters, the harder the unit has to work and the worse your breathing is going to get.
- Do a pest check. A home maintenance job that you should add to your list this month is to check for pests. As we move towards summer and into the winter, you want to make sure that you don’t have any critters living in your attic or any other areas of your home. Engaging with a professional pest and termite treatment every single year can help to keep your home in good condition.
