Livinga cramped bedroom isn’t good for your sanity. It can feel claustrophobic and this may disrupt your sleep – or just generally make your life less easy. You dread going into your bedroom as everything feels so clustered together. What can be done about this? As it turns out, quite a lot of things! This is a partner post.
Some of these ideas are quick and simple while others are more intense. Either way, they’ll help you make your bedroom feel more spacious and less suffocating.
Move The Bed
Simple and straight to the point; move your bed to a different part of the bedroom and see if this makes a difference. Sometimes, shifting the angle of your bed is enough to make the room feel more spacious. It’s all to do with perspective and how your mind sees things – if you move your bed from the centre to the side, it can make you think there’s extra space in the room so it seems less cramped to you!
Get A Smaller Bed
If that doesn’t work, get a smaller bed.
Be honest with yourself – do you need a massive bed in your bedroom? If you sleep alone, a small double bed is as big as you need. Even if you sleep with a partner, you don’t always need a King, Queen, Superking or Emperor bed. A regular Double is 190cm by 137cm (as per Naturalmat) but a King is 200cm by 150cm and a Queen is 200cm by 160cm. You’re gaining some valuable space by downgrading to a smaller size – pick the smallest bed that doesn’t compromise your comfort.
Install Fitted Wardrobes With Sliding Doors
Wardrobes and closets take up lots of space as they jut out from the walls and almost tower overbearingly above you. One fix for this is to install fitted wardrobes with sliding doors. The fact they’re “fitted” means they can be built flush into the walls and won’t stick out as much. You can also maximise the wall space and get them built to the ceiling, providing more storage space for your clothes and clutter.
The real kicker here is the sliding door element. Instead of your wardrobe doors opening out into the room and taking up more space, they slide back and forth. It’s the ultimate space-saver and your room will look and feel a lot more open.
Get Multifunctional Bedside Tables
Reducing the cramped feeling in your room is partially about getting rid of unnecessary furniture and objects. Do you really need a massive chest of drawers in your bedroom? Having a fitted wardrobe can negate the need for this as drawers can be built into it, but opting for multifunctional bedside tables also helps.
Instead of just having a table with space underneath, get one with drawers built in. Your pants, socks and other clothing can go in there and you can sell or recycle your old chest of drawers. There’s no longer a bulky piece of furniture sucking up valuable space – you’ve got one or two small tables nestled next to your bed.
You don’t need to give your home a makeover to make your bedroom feel less cramped. Sure, you can install a few new things or swap some furniture out, but that’s all there is to it. It’s very easy to take action and give yourself a more spacious bedroom with room to breathe.
