My little guy is home sick with me today, and he’s feeling miserable. I hate it. He’s got flushed cheeks, feels awful, and we’ve been cuddled up on the couch watching Harry Potter most of the morning. As moms I think we feel worse than our sick little ones because it seems like there is nothing we can do to “fix” it. I’m not a big fan of pumping medicines into my kids (or myself) unless it’s really the only option for getting the on the mend from an infection or virus. For the common cold, which seems to come and go for months on end in our house, I prefer Natural Cold Remedies. It’s hard to know which remedies work and which ones don’t. These are some of my go to Natural Cold Remedies that I know I can always count on.
Natural Cold Remedies that Work
Rest
Rest, rest and more rest when they aren’t feeling well. Rest really can be the best thing for a cold. Little bodies and big need lots of rest to fight off germs, bugs, viruses, or infections. Sometimes being exhausted or physically run down can make you more susceptible to catching a cold because your immune system is exhausted too. Overdoing it when you’re sick, or when you first start feeling better, can make getting over the cold much harder. Taking time for naps or just resting can get you on the mend quickly.
Fluids
Fluids are always important, but when you’re feeling under the weather, or have a fever, or both, fluids help to hydrate your body and help flush your system. If you have a cold or sinus issue, those fluids can also help to flush the nasal and sinus passages, offering relief and respite from irritation. Water’s always a good one, but you can also drink broth or herbal tea. Avoid caffeine containing fluids or sugary soft drinks because these can actually make dehydration worse.
Saline Spray
Use it, and use it again. Saline spray helps flush germs and mucous OUT. A Neti pot is a great option too, for adults. It might be awkward the first time or two you do it but it makes a world of difference.
Humidifier
Running a humidifier gets moist air into the airways- helps keep the nasal passages moist and offers some relief. It can also relieve the dry throat and chest that sometimes comes with a cold.
Cough Syrup
Maty’s Organic Cough Syrup – holistically made, with the whole body in mind. Not only does it offer relief from that pesky cough, but it also has 10 immune boosting ingredients to help give your immune system a boost when it needs one the most! It’s safe for everyone over the age of 1. Most cough syrups aren’t safe for little ones. Because it’s not a medicine it can be used as needed to relieve that pesky cough. The ingredients in Maty’s Organic Cough Syrup also soothe irritated throats and improve respiratory function.
Chest Rub
I think by now we’ve all heard of Vick’s Vapo Rub. Maty’s makes a natural version of Vick’s Vapo Rub that’s got peppermint and eucalyptus but without petroleum. Based on a traditional home remedy, our vapor rub has the additional benefits of healthy oils like sunflower, coconut, and castor. You get relief while strengthening your immune system. Since it is a topical ointment, it’s appropriate for diabetics looking for an alternative to oral products that contain sugar.

I’ve used Matys before and I really enjoyed their products! I just have never seen their products in the store before, though. It seems like they’ve added some new products to their line-up since I last tried their brand. Right now, my go-to remedy is turkey tail mushroom supplements. I also use oregano and turmeric supplements from time to time, too.

My daughter has been sick with a cold off and on for almost a month now. Since she started Kindergarten it feels like the never ending cold season and I hope it passes soon. It’s been icky!
I do; however, appreciate your list. I’ve never heard of Maty’s products and love that there are organic products on the market to help our little ones over the hump. Definitely going to check into them this weekend! I am ready to rid of this cough and runny nose that keeps circling around.

My son just said today that he doesn’t feel good so we just got a few things from the store. My favorite is the chest rub. It works the best and cleans out the nose so he can breath and sleep.

That’s the worse feeling isn’t it, when our kids get sick. I’d rather have their sickness than them get sick. Hope your little one gets better soon.
