Having pets is one of the most rewarding experiences we can have as humans. It’s also a great responsibility. Keeping our pets healthy is part of that responsibility. I’ve had overweight pets in my lifetime. When I met my husband, his cat, Raistlin, was quite overweight, and on kitty diet food. She did lose four pounds over a long time, but it was a really tough process and not fun for any of us. (Especially when our friends, Karly and Ally, would sneak her extra food because she looked hungry all the time… love them both, but it didn’t help!)
And there’s our old boy Tobey, who, quite frankly, is a little overweight but not a lot. He has two fatty deposits on his trunk that make him look a lot bigger than he is. He’s such a sweet boy, we want him to be with us for a long time!
According to a recent survey by the Association for Pet Obesity and Prevention, only 11% of parents of overweight
pets realize their pets are overweight.
Only 11% of us realize this? That’s not a good number. Just like people, the more weight our furrier family members carry, the more at risk they are for disease, illness and injury. Their lives are shorter than ours already! I will tell you, with some pets, it isn’t always easy to know if they are overweight from sight alone.
This video featuring Dr. Ashley Gallagher gives some great pointers including, of course, taking your pet to the
veterinarian. But what if you want to know if that visit is necessary? Well, try standing above your dog or cat
while looking down. If you can’t see your pet’s ribs or feel them while placing your hands on the side of their
chest, they are probably overweight. Sometimes it can be tough to know if your pet is overweight but watching helpful videos like this can help you to assess a pet’s situation. Check out this pet weight score tool to see if your pet may be overweight!

My pup somehow manages to stay slender even though he eats way too much. No idea how.

We don’t have pets yet, but this is good to know. It’s crazy how many don’t realize their pets are overweight! This lady walks her weiner dog by my house and the poor dogs belly drags the ground. I’m thinking that’s definitely overweight.

It’s sad when pets aren’t taken care of and get really fat. This product really works. We use it to keep our cat’s weight under control.

That’s a fair percentage of weight loss. It totally worked. I need to tell my sis so she can get her pudgy pup on the plan.
