You are what you eat… chances are, if you want to have a baby, you want to provide the best of everything you can to your future child. Well, that includes housing, right? And your body, your uterus, will be your baby’s first home. The healthier you are eating, the healthier your body will be.
Ways to Improve Your Odds of Getting Pregnant
Stop smoking. Really. Smoking doesn’t do anyone any good. I say in all seriousness. It ages you, it ages your eggs, can impede fertility, and shortens your life. Drinking lots of alcohol and using recreational (or other) drugs can inhibit conception as well.
The higher your weight, the lower your fertility. If you are overweight, losing 10 lbs might help make a difference.
Know your body. Know your ovulation signals. By tracking your LH level you can pinpoint the most fertile window in your menstrual cycle and optimize your timing.Having lots of sex when you have the right cervical mucus can be fun and may just give a happy ending! If you don’t know what cervical mucus (CM on most any message board anywhere relating to fertility) is, exactly what it sounds like. Mucus-like fluid that is released from the glands near the cervix that either help move things (sperm) along towards the egg (generally referred to as EWCM or egg-white cervical mucus- this is what you WANT to have when you are looking to get pregnant) or (SCM- sticky – which impedes movement of the sperm). For most of us, CM not only helps the sperm to get where they need to go but it also helps to let US know when our bodies are at the right time to make a baby.
Most OTC lubricants are hostile to sperm. That’s kind of counter productive. Look for something designed to welcome those little swimmers so they have a chance to reach the “golden” egg! Astroglide TTC™ is made especially for couples trying to conceive because it has a similar viscosity to cervical mucus, helping to support favorable conditions for conception. It also contains galactose and fructose, which are found in semen.
Keep things interesting. Trying to conceive, especially if it’s not a quick journey, can get almost routine and tiresome for some couples. Get creative, and have a little fun- keep that spark alive!
Back to the timing and knowing your cycle: have lots of sex a few days before, during, and a few days after ovluation (just in case, because you just never know). Keeping track of your cervical mucus and using a basal body thermometer will give you a wealth of information!
Have a little lovin’ in the morning. Sometimes the early bird gets the worm, you know? I am being silly, but really, it’s kind of true. Men are usually “ready” to go early in the morning, physically speaking, so take some advantage, and who knows?
Listen, trying to conceive isn’t always this fun, quick and easy process. Sometimes I still want to send a letter to my insurance companies demanding back the copays I paid for YEARS for birth control pills… because as it turns out, I really never needed them. I say that and I have my happy ending. I had miscarriages and chemical pregnancies and it was a struggle for several years but ultimately, I’m one of the very, very lucky ones who had a happy ending. I hope, hope hope that some of these tips may help you – and if they don’t, or you are struggling, I hope with all of my heart that you are able to find a way to have your own happy ending. I’m so glad there are products around that can help us with the process at home now, either before or in conjunction with a doctor’s assistance (which is what ultimately worked for us).
